Overview
Sonic X-treme is a cancelled 3D Sonic platform game was developed by Sega Technical Institute, a team of Sega staff members overseas.
The game was originally developed for the 32X, but due to poor sales in the west, development was shifted to the Sega Saturn, which was originally scheduled for release on Christmas day 1996. Images of Dr. Eggman, Metal Sonic, and Fang were published in magazines over there during the development of the game.
However, repeated changes in the person responsible and the development team, delays in development tools, several staff members leaving the project, and the departure of a responsible person from the team due to ill health made development more difficult, and the project was eventually cancelled. It is stated that Yuji Naka himself even threaten to leave Sega when he learned that the team was given the source code of Nights into Dreams to use.
Later, there was a proposal to release the game as a PC game, but Sega at the time prioritized porting existing games, and funding did not come through, so this too was buried in history.
