This work is a story that confronts the transience of life and the inevitable fate of death. The ‘Lyke Wake Dirge’ quoted at the beginning of the story symbolises the journey of the soul after death, and hints at the theme that runs through the whole story, ‘the boundary between life and death’. The main characters face their past wounds and what they have lost, and search for hope in the darkness.
