This story started to come together as I was finishing up the Remembering Ariel comic. I wanted so badly to revisit the alternate world and its cast. So I shamelessly left myself a door open to it. XD But every new story is an opportunity to learn about the characters, no matter which reality they're in. It seems Ariel can be a bit drunk-like when she's exceptionally tired (in a fairly adorable way, I might add). And Roland and Andrea are compatible with each other - BUT this is an alternate pairing. It's unlikely this will happen in the "main" universe... (For reference, both are heterosexual and trans, with Roland being panromantic and Andrea being fully hetero. I plan to address this soonish in planned character sheets.) But what's this? Of who knows how many alternates, genie Ariel's parents are the only rich ones? And they're criminals? Story two expands greatly on the world, introducing to us a lot of characters we'll see frequently. First up, we have the denizens of Northern Light, from Mayor Shelly to Star herself. Star in particular becomes a major player from here on, and we'll learn more about her as time goes on. For now, she seems to be the calm (but sometimes motormouthed) guardian of Northern Light... And remember Harold Boggs... We're not done with him yet! Otherwise, we have Embra's parents. I see often in real life and in stories of trans kids being disowned by their parents. But it doesn't always happen. So here, we have them separated by forces out of their control, and the parents go looking for their trans daughter, never stopping once they return from the dead. That reunion I poured my heart into at the time! (And having them add Star wasn't much of a stretch, when you think about their story.) As per the usual with Embra's stories, I try to make sure that it's known I do not own the setting, some characters, and concepts used for this story. Influenced by my love for a certain video game series, I created this world of genies and magic that continues to expand and grow to this day. But this is where it started, with the tale of Ariel wishing for a power to help others, and she gets it on the day she could have died. She now lives a future full of hope and wonder! This is it, the ending to Melody and Alex's origin story! And I admit I have some good feelings about this particular chapter. Taking place in February 2024, we meet Tasha, a demigirl mermaid whose family has been struggling with her transformations alone for some time... Melody and Alex intervene, and help grow the young girl's confidence. ... Wait, transformationS? Indeed, we've actually seen Tasha before; she is from the epilogue scene of Curse Upon the New Moon, the demigirl whose parents were desperate enough to help her achieve her identity that they found a carnival wizard to help her. It seems her life has taken a strange (and rough) turn in the couple years since we last saw her. But now with this story, Curse Upon the New Moon finally is shown to be a part of the overall Behind the Veil storyline (and where the events fit into it all). Meanwhile, I have new future plans for Tasha and her family; we WILL see her again! As we will Melody and Alex.
