『マクロスゼロ』とは、マクロスシリーズの一つである。
超時空要塞マクロスの前史にあたる作品である。
登場する機体に実在する機体、あるいはその改造機が含まれ、VF-0のエンジンも既存のエンジンをカリッカリにチューンしたものであることから、現実世界とマクロス世界を繋ぐ作品ともいえる。
1999年7月、後にマクロスと名づけられる異星人の宇宙戦艦が地球へ落下した。この艦よりもたらされた様々なオーバーテクノロジーの奪い合いに端を発する争いは、やがて統合戦争と呼ばれる世界大戦に発展する。
戦争末期の2008年。統合軍パイロットの工藤シンは、反統合同盟軍の可変戦闘機SV-51に乗機を撃墜され、今なお伝説が生きる南海の孤島マヤン島に流れ着く。そこで彼は島の巫女サラ・ノームとその妹マオ・ノームと出会った。一方、落下した宇宙戦艦と同様のエイリアン反応を示す物体がマヤン島付近の海底に沈んでいることが判明し、統合軍と反統合同盟軍は新型可変戦闘機VF-0 フェニックスとSV-51を配備した回収部隊を派遣する。マヤン島を舞台に戦争が始まり、伝説に謡われた「鳥の人」が目覚めて「滅びの歌」を唄う時、世界は破滅の淵を覗うことになる。

実は元々『マクロスゼロ』は軍記物として製作が開始されたらしい。
だが、製作中に同時多発テロ、殊更未だ記憶に残る世界貿易センタービルへの旅客機の衝突事件が発生し、急遽神話物として作り直されたと言われている。

This was before I knew that there actually was an official novel of the game, written by the game’s scriptwriter, but I still wanted to continue with this version since I planned to add characters and Variable Fighters that hadn’t been featured in the game, so think of this version as just an “alternate version,” like "Do You Remember Love?” is to SDF Macross. One thing I won’t be adding to the story will be the Macross Delta characters. It isn’t that I dislike Delta or its characters, but that I plan to add them to a story I’m going to write for the Macross 40th Anniversary in October. Lastly, I had toyed with the idea of translating this story into Japanese on this site but decided against it for two reasons. First, I can’t write in Japanese and second, even really good translation programs like DeepL aren’t perfect and would probably mangle the text.
