Nijisanji (Application)
A smartphone application for the iPhoneX developed by ANYCOLOR inc.(renamed from Ichikara inc. in May 2021).
It is an application which enables users to become 'virtual liver' (virtual livestreamer) by reflecting their facial expressions on 2D models using the facial recognition system of the iPhone X default built-in Animoji function, and to perform web live-streaming.
It supports live streaming on Mirrativ, YouTube and other platforms.
The application was originally intended to be released as an app for general users, but was suspended due to lack of approval.
Therefore, the app has been used by the 'Official Virtual Livers' (公式バーチャルライバー) recruited through auditions since January 2018 for the purpose of pre-release testing and promotional activities, and is still distributed by ANYCOLOR only to those official livers who have subsequently made their debut.
Nijisanji (Virtual Streamer Group)
Alongside 'Nijisanji' as the name of the app, the virtual streamer group run by Ichikara (later ANYCOLOR) is also called 'Nijisanji'.
From 2019 onwards, 'Nijisanji' generally refers to this meaning.
The entire project in which this 'Nijisanji' is encompassed is referred to as the "Nijisanji Project".
Nijisanji is a group of live-streamers who started their activities in 2018 due to the above-mentioned circumstances; as of July 2022, the number of members belonging to the group, including international projects (such as NIJISANJI EN, which is managed in English-speaking countries, and VirtuaReal Project, which is co-managed with bilibili in China), is more than 200, making it one of the largest groups in the virtual YouTuber industry.
The member active on Nijisanji are conventionally referred to as "Virtual Liver" rather than as "Virtual Streamer" or "Virtual YouTuber".
They mainly broadcast live and post videos on YouTube and are active in a variety of fields. As a group, they only have the same basic system for streaming, whereas the specific streaming content, broadcasting environment, editing techniques, etc. differ widely from one Liver to the next.
The main attraction is the unique and free streaming style of the group, which, despite belonging to a commercial corporation, is at the level of a privately managed one. It can be said that the design concept of the application, "anyone can do virtual live streaming", is well reflected.
There is also an emphasis on developing 3D modelling for members, in which case the range of members' activities has expanded to include streams that do not use the Nijisanji app.
Through 2018, groups in the Japanese Domestic Groups were divided into three groups according to their debut date and/or their specific concept, but since 1 January 2019, all members have been integrated into 'Nijisanji', eliminating the framework of each group.
Since late 2018, they have also been actively expanding overseas, and the Japanese domestic group is sometimes referred to as 'NIJISANJI JP' by the international group.
In early 2022, it was announced that NIJISANJI ID and NIJISANJI KR would be integrated into the domestic 'NIJISANJI' group, which was officially integrated into NIJISANJI as of 15 April 2022.
These schemes of people from derivative and overseas groups are often referred to as "ex-〇〇" or "from 〇〇".

In Nijisanji, there is a tendency for emphasis in terms of where they originally belonged to and when they started their activities, so it is still possible to classify members by group or combination. Refer also to the article List of NIJISANJI Combination and Group Tags.
While previous combination/unit names were spontaneously given, those Livers debuting after 2020 often share the same world setting as characters from their debut with their peers, and after 2022 they may be officially given unit names from the start, such as NIJISANJI EN.
As of 1 December 2022, there were 141 members in NIJISANJI.

Note 2: As of 14 December 2022, the NIJISANJI Project as a whole, including 31 NIJISANJI EN members, had 172 members.
Note 3: As of 9 December 2022, there were 216 official Livers as a whole, including 43 VirtuaReal, who are also listed in the character introduction on the official NIJISANJI website (excluding VirtuaReal Star/Link, who are not listed on the official NIJISANJI website due to differences in their contractual status).
Note 4: The Virtual Talent Academy is not included as it is a separate project.

As their affiliation is simply "Nijisanji", there is no official framework name, but members who debuted on the same day or in the same month often work together relatively more often, especially their peers, which is often treated as a unit.
